Rapper and hip-hop mogul Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs is currently in Brooklyn, being detained for s*x trafficking and racketeering charges, for which he was arrested back in September. Though he has categorically denied all charges, many of his past events and antics have resurfaced in the public and have led to massive speculations.

He has gone by seven names in the past and once, even refused to explain the origins of his name ‘Puff Daddy’ in an interview with Oprah Winfrey. An expert recently speculated that the name changes might have a more sinister reason.

Sean Combs, Diddy, P. Diddy, Puff Daddy, Love, and Brother Love are some of the names that rapper Diddy has been known by in the past few years. The rapper began his music career as a solo artist with the name Puff Daddy and then went on to call himself P Diddy. He went on to change his name several times in his career.

In light of his recent arrest on s*x trafficking and racketeering charges, the rapper’s past has been seen in a new light, with his celebrity associations and public antics resurfacing. His constant name change act might reportedly have a more sinister reason than just a casual name change.

According to an expert, Kayley Cornelius, who spoke to the Daily Star, while most celebrities choose one brand identity, hoping never to lose themselves in the public eye, Diddy’s name changes appeared to be a calculated move. Cornelius said,

In P Diddy’s case, frequent rebranding might have been a way to blur the lines, making it tougher for the public to keep up…Using more generic names like Love or Swag dilutes the uniqueness of his brand, complicating efforts to trace him digitally, especially given how briefly his name changes have lasted. These names get buried in the vastness of the internet, making any evidence or association harder to track down.

Cornelius also mentioned that though he changed his name constantly, he returned to his core brand when it came to releasing new music.

While Diddy’s name changes might be a way to scrub his digital presence, the meaning behind some of these names remains a mystery. The rapper has divulged that the name ‘Puff’ or ‘Puffy’ came from his childhood and was one of his first nicknames. He claimed that he was called so because he used to be very angry as a kid (via CNN).

However, the rapper once refused to reveal why he was called Puff Daddy, which became his first stage name. When asked by Oprah Winfrey about the name, he said (via Irish Star),

It’s a nickname somebody gave me…I’ve never told anyone that. I know you get people to tell you everything, Oprah. But I can’t look you in the eye and explain that one…I’ll answer every other question.

The rapper reportedly changed his name after the 1999 club shooting incident and went by P Diddy, which he claimed was given to him by the Notorious B.I.G.
