Another added, “This is clearly just an attempt to tear down a Black woman’s success.”

Simone Biles, widely regarded as one of the greatest athletes in the world, has faced unfair criticism before, particularly surrounding issues of mental health and body image, but this latest attack has reopened a national conversation about race, gender, and how Black female athletes are treated by the media. Caitlin Clark, on the other hand, has received widespread admiration for her standout performances in basketball, but the comparison between the two sparked questions of bias in how different athletes are celebrated or critiqued.

Supporters of both Biles and Clark quickly rallied to defend the athletes. “Both of these women are at the top of their game in their respective sports,” one tweet read. “Stop making this about race or trying to pit them against each other.”
