A source from the prosecutor’s office, speaking on condition of anonymity due to the sensitive nature of the investigation that authorities believe Payne obtained drugs from a hotel employee prior to his fall from multiple stories at the CasaSur Palermo Hotel in Buenos Aires, Argentina. The former One Direction member died at the age of 31 on October 16.
The source stated, ‘There appears to be evidence that a hotel employee sourced the drugs for Payne. An indictment for drug distribution could follow shortly.
In a public statement translated from Spanish, the prosecutor stated that all avenues of investigation remain open, including the possibility of foul play. They are specifically looking into who supplied drugs to Liam Payne in the hours before his death, which were reportedly found in his hotel room. The investigation also seeks to determine any potential involvement of third parties leading up to his passing.
Multiple sources had previously informed that Payne was asked to leave another hotel, the Palacio Duhau – Park Hyatt Buenos Aires, due to appearing intoxicated and disturbing other guests. The hotel declined to comment on the situation.

A preliminary autopsy report confirmed that Payne died from multiple injuries and “internal and external” hemorrhages as a result of the fall, according to the National Criminal and Correctional Prosecutor’s Office.
The coroners that 25 injuries identified in the autopsy were ‘compatible with those caused by a fall from a height,’ emphasizing that ‘the head injuries were sufficient to cause death.’ They also noted that ‘internal and external hemorrhages’ in the skull, thorax, abdomen, and limbs contributed to Payne’s fatality.
Authorities reported that ‘no defensive injuries were found,’ and no evidence suggested the involvement of any third parties. The prosecutor’s office handling the case has confirmed that a toxicology report is still pending.
After Payne’s death, Buenos Aires police discovered his hotel room ‘in total disorder,’ according to authorities.
Law enforcement examined Liam Payne’s hotel room on October 17 and discovered prescription clonazepam (brand name: Klonopin), energy supplements, and various over-the-counter medications scattered throughout, along with ‘various items broken.’
A whiskey bottle, lighter, and cellphone were later recovered from the hotel’s internal courtyard, where Payne’s body was found. Photos obtained by the Daily Mail, allegedly showing his hotel room, indicated extensive drug paraphernalia and a smashed television.
Authorities collected fingerprints, a notebook, his passport, and other evidence for lab analysis. The police also inspected the balcony area to assess potential access points.
