Travis Kelce Faces NFL Discipline for Controversial Taylor Swift-Inspired Move – Fans Shocked
For the first time in eight years, Travis Kelce has not scored a touchdown through the first two weeks of an NFL season. Even still, Kelce‘s Kansas City Chiefs are 2-0 — although the superstar tight end’s performances early this season are a slight concern.
Before the season, Kelce signed a contract extension that made him the NFL’s best-paid tight end — bringing him a little closer to matching high-powered partner Taylor Swift‘s immense wealth. However, the NFL could move to lighten Kelce’s wallet a little following last week’s win over the Cincinnati Bengals — and Swift might bear some of the responsibility.
Is there a fine on the way?
The NFL has laid down a marker for how it will approach certain player celebrations in 2024. The league fined Bengals wide receiver Andrei Iosivas more than $5,000 in response to his “bow-and-arrow” celebration during last Sunday’s 26-25 loss in Kansas City, deeming it “unsportsmanlike conduct“.
But it was not lost on social media users that Kelce has long used this same celebration, especially since he began dating Swift last year. Swift, a Grammy-winning singer-songwriter whose hits include a song titled “The Archer“, has even performed the gesture on stage during her globe-spanning Eras Tour.
Yet there appears to be no fine imminently forthcoming for Kelce, whose contract in KC runs until 2027 and guarantees him a $17 million salary this season.
However, the NFL’s choice to fine Iosivas for the archer celebration could put Kelce on alert entering Sunday night’s game against the Atlanta Falcons. Kelce will have a great opportunity to break out of his early-season “slump” — and if he grabs a touchdown or two, the 34-year-old will have to make sure he celebrates somewhat respectfully.
