Dad’s biggest fans! Lionel Messi and his wife, Antonela Roccuzzo , have been sharing details of their family life since becoming parents.
The soccer star met Roccuzzo when he was young, but the two reconnected later in life after the model lost one of her closest friends. The Argentines confirmed their relationship in 2009 and got engaged a year later.
In June 2012, the couple announced that they were expecting their first child. Later that year, they welcomed their son Thiago. Three years later, Thiago became a big brother when Roccuzzo gave birth to their second son, Mateo, in September 2015.
Seven years after getting engaged, the couple tied the knot in their hometown of Rosario, Argentina, in July 2017. They welcomed their third child, Ciro, in March 2018.
A year later, the Paris Saint-Germain player spoke about his experience of becoming a father.
“You grow and you learn,” he said in an interview published in October 2019 on the FC Barcelona website. “You accumulate experience in all aspects of life, on and off the pitch. But, as a human being, having three children changed my perspective on life, my way of thinking and also helped me grow.”
She continued: “Even though there are few moments of respite at home with three children, we [Antonela and I] try to enjoy every second with them, whether it is watching TV, playing or whatever. We like to stay at home and enjoy these moments.”
In addition to their time together off the pitch, the family supports the Ballon d’Or winner when he competes. In November 2022, Roccuzzo and the couple’s children cheered on Messi when he competed in the 2022 World Cup championship with Argentina’s national team, ultimately taking home the win a month later.
“I CAN’T EXPLAIN IT BECAUSE YOU WON’T UNDERSTAND IT!!!!. 🇦🇷🇦🇷🇦🇷🇦🇷🇦🇷🇦🇷 🇦🇷🇦🇷🇦🇷🇦🇷🇦🇷🇦🇷🇦🇷🇦🇷 GO ARGENTINA!!! GO @leomessi !!!!!”, wrote the nutritionist alongside a photo of herself with her three children, all wearing shirts with Messi’s number.
Before becoming a World Champion, Messi spoke about how special it is to share the new memories he is creating with his three children now that they are old enough to understand and appreciate the sport.
“From the beginning, from kick-off to the final whistle, I think about my children,” the athlete admitted after beating Australia in the round of 16, according to The Athletic . “They are growing up. They understand better what is happening and they enjoy it more.”

After the footballer won the 2022 World Cup with Argentina, his wife shared a snapshot of the family gathered around the trophy.
“WORLD CHAMPIONS 🇦🇷🇦🇷🇦🇷🇦🇷🇦🇷 🇦🇷🇦🇷🇦🇷🇦🇷 I don’t even know how to start… how proud we are for you @leomessi. Thank you for teaching us to never give up, we have to fight until the end,” she wrote via Instagram in December 2022. “YOU ARE FINALLY THE WORLD CHAMPION, we know what you suffered for so many years, you wanted to achieve this!!!
