We know Griner plays in the WNBA—the Women’s National Basketball Association—but when you hear her voice, it’s undeniably deep and masculine. This has sparked a lot of questions.

On top of that, Griner, who identifies as a lesbian, recently made headlines for another surprising reason. About three to four months ago, news broke that Griner’s partner, Cheryl, had gotten pregnant. The question on everyone’s mind was: How did this happen? There were no reports of surrogacy or any other explanations. The announcement was simply made that Brittney and Cheryl were expecting a baby.

Now, we all know that biologically, two women cannot conceive a child on their own. That’s a fact. So when news of Griner’s pregnancy spread, some people started to speculate if Griner, who has been at the center of rumors for years, might not actually be a woman at all. Some believe Griner could be the first male player in the WNBA.

When you watch Griner dunk, sure, she looks like a female athlete. But still, these questions persist.

Now, fast forward to the big announcement. Cheryl gave birth, and the couple proudly shared that their son, named Bash, was born on July 8th. During an interview with CBS Sports, Griner gushed about becoming a mom, but there was something that caught people’s attention.

Griner referred to herself as “Pops,” not Mom.

Now, think about this for a moment: What female would want to be called “Pops”? That’s a term traditionally reserved for fathers. When Griner was corrected by the interviewer, who referred to her as “Mom,” Griner quickly corrected her, saying she preferred to be called “Pops.”

This has raised even more questions. Could Griner’s choice of words be a subtle admission of something else? Could it be that Griner is embracing her identity as something other than a female?

During the interview, Griner also shared how excited she was about becoming a mother, revealing how her phone is now filled with pictures of her newborn. But the term “Pops” stands out. Is this Griner’s way of saying something bigger about her gender identity?

There have been circulating images of Griner that only add to the confusion. Some show her without a shirt, with a flat chest, which only fuels the ongoing speculation about her being biologically male.

At this point, it’s clear that Griner isn’t trying to hide these questions; she might even be embracing them.
