After he was taken into custody, numerous past interviews and video clips resurfaced on the Internet. Some showed disturbing scenes, while others revealed more of Diddy’s past that could help the investigation.
Diddy Wouldn’t Reveal to Oprah The Meaning Behind His Name
Netizens became even more curious about the life of the music mogul after the scandal broke out, and many found his 2006 interview with Oprah Winfrey. While speaking with the famed host, Diddy seemed to evade the question about his stage name.
He was previously known as Puff Diddy, but later changed it to P. Diddy and now, he only goes by Diddy. When Oprah tried to inquire where he got his moniker, the rapper said (via Irish Star):
It’s a nickname somebody gave me. I’ve never told anyone that. I know you get people to tell you everything, Oprah. But I can’t look you in the eye and explain that one.
He shoved the question aside and said, “It’s just a silly name.” It was evident that he didn’t want to reveal to the world the deeper meaning and significance of his stage name. The host respected Diddy’s decision not to disclose any more of the subject, with the latter pledging, “I’ll answer every other question” except that one.

While there’s no clear explanation as to where he got the name, fans believe his changing it to P. Diddy has something to do with the infamous 1999 nightclub shooting incident. Three people were injured during the incident, and one woman who claimed to be a victim revealed Diddy was allegedly responsible for her injury.
After several weeks of trial, the rapper was found innocent of all charges related to the shooting. In 2001, he announced that he would now go by the name P. Diddy. Despite being a free man, he still decided to alter his stage name to protect his image.

In his other interviews, he opened up about his many nicknames. He told JET Magazine in 1998 that he had a temper when he was younger and his friend started calling him “Puffy”. While speaking with CNN, he shared:
I’ve had different name changes because I only just grew up in a neighborhood where everybody had nicknames. My first nickname was Puffy…
At the time, the rapper could no longer remember which of his names came first because he had quite a lot.
